  • Spondylosis deformans is a condition that affects the vertebral bones of the spine and is characterized by the presence of bony spurs or osteophytes along the edges of the bones of the spine. • Spryng intra-articular injectable is an injectable device composed two naturally derived proteins (bovine collagen and elastin) and a carbohydrate (porcine heparin glycan). It is used to help manage non-infectious causes of joint pain in cats, dogs, and horses. When injected into a joint, it creates a spongy matrix that increases joint support and shock absorption, providing a cushioning effect like healthy cartilage. Spryng is to be administered only by trained veterinarians.

  • Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a tumor of the cells that make up the contact or upper layer of the skin. UV light exposure has been described as a developmental factor in people and appears to be associated with its development in cats. Areas affected include the ear tips, skin, toes, or peri-ocular region. Fine needle aspiration or biopsy may be performed for diagnosis. The metastatic rate does not appear overly clear, though staging is always recommended. SCC of the toe can occur as a primary tumor or may have spread from the lung (lung-digit syndrome). Surgery is almost always recommended in any case of SCC; the role of chemotherapy is controversial. Radiation therapy has an excellent response rate in cats with the SCC affecting the nasal planum and may give long-term tumor control.

  • Squamous cell carcinoma is a tumor of the cells that make up the contact or upper layer of the skin. UV light exposure has been described as a developmental factor in people, though it is still in question as to the role for dogs. Tumors can develop anywhere that skin cells are present, including the nail bed, paw pads, abdomen, back, ears, or nose, including the nasal planum (top edge of the nose).

  • Stanozolol (brand names: Winstrol®, Menabol®, Neurabol®, Stanol®, Stromba®, Stombaject®) is an anabolic steroid that no longer commercially marketed in the US. It is currently used off label as a compounded medication to treat weight loss, anemia, poor appetite, and other issues in pet animals (not farmed animals). • Staph (or staphylococcal) dermatitis is an inflammatory skin condition that the skin caused by a group of bacteria called Staphylococcus. Any disorder that causes itching or a change in the skin’s environment can create the ideal conditions to allow Staphylococcus to become a problem. This handout discusses Staphylococcus dermatitis in dogs, as well as a hypersensitivity (allergic) reaction to this bacteria. The clinical signs of these conditions, along with diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis, are outlined.

  • Stasis Breaker is an herbal blend used in Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) to reverse blood stagnation and improve circulation in dogs, cats, and horses. It is often recommended for the treatment of cancers that are in the form of a nodule or mass (solid form).

Stem cell therapy is the process of placing stem cells from the body into diseased or damaged tissues. This process is often referred to as regenerative medicine.
