  • Diphenhydramine is given by mouth or as an injection and is used on and off label to treat allergic reactions, motion sickness, and to induce sedation. Side effects include sleepiness, and less commonly dry mouth and gastrointestinal upset.

  • Edetate calcium disodium (CaEDTA) is used for the treatment of lead and zinc toxicities when oral treatment is not possible. It may be used in all species of animals. Prior to treatment with edetate calcium disodium, it is imperative that the source of lead or zinc is removed from the animal through gastrointestinal decontamination.

  • There are many breeds of miniature pigs, including the Vietnamese pot-bellied pig, Julianas, and KuneKunes. Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs typically live for 14-21 years. Mini-pigs should never be left alone unsupervised with even the friendliest dogs and cats. Mini-pigs are very smart and can be trained to walk on a leash/harness and to sit, stay, come, and retrieve objects.

  • Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is a long molecule that contains an organism’s entire genetic code. Every cell in the body contains two identical strands of DNA, and this DNA contains the “instructions” (genes) needed to create and run every part of the body. This handout summarizes how DNA works and how it directs the overall appearance, health, and actions of an animal.

  • Glucosamine + chondroitin combination is a nutritional supplement used to treat osteoarthritis in dogs, cats, miniature pigs, and other animals, as well as feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD) in cats. Glucosamine acts as a mild anti-inflammatory and is used by the joints to make cartilage components and by the urinary tract for protection. Chondroitin inhibits destruction and promotes production of cartilage components.

  • Honey, topical (HoneyCure®, Medihoney®, Silver Honey®, L-Mesitran®, HoneyHeel®), is a medical-grade honey used in all animal species as an alternative or adjunctive therapy for skin conditions, including wounds due to injury and burn wounds.

  • Mini-pigs may be housed successfully inside if they are given enough space, an area in which to root, and proper environmental enrichment. Ideally, pet pigs should have access to a safe area of untreated lawn outside in which to root and chew on grass.
