Dogs + Others

  • Whether you and your dog decide to share a bed is a personal choice that involves several factors. The health of you and your dog should be taken into consideration as well as any behavioral issues your dog may have. There can be many benefits for both you and your dog to co-sleep if the circumstances align.

  • Pet owners show off their dogs at dog shows, which are organized events that provide an audience primed for admiring the glory of the canine kingdom. A dog show is an official gathering of dogs and their owners/handlers in a competitive arena.

  • Skunks spray volatile compounds from their anal sacs if they feel threatened by a potential predator such as a dog. If sprayed in the face your dog may need veterinary care, as corneal damage can occur if sprayed in the eyes, and vomiting, diarrhea, or anemia can result if sprayed in the mouth.

  • Choosing to bring a new pet into your life is an exciting journey. Many people decide to adopt, rather than shop, for a pet, since there are so many cats and dogs who need homes. This handout outlines some key resources for adopting pets so you can find the right pet for your family.

  • The two groups of spiders responsible for most medically significant spider bites include the widow spiders (Latrodectus spp., including the black widow spider) and the recluse spiders (Loxosceles spp., including the brown recluse). The clinical signs and treatment of black widow and brown recluse spider bites vary significantly due to differences in their venom.

  • Getting a purebred dog comes with some pros and cons. You know what you are getting but also run a higher risk for genetically tied health problems. Do some research before selecting a new pup, purebred or otherwise.

  • This handout summarizes the differences between brand-name and generic medications, explains cost differences, and provides guidance on how to decide between the various options.

  • Keeping a dog appropriately confined keeps them safe by preventing mishaps associated with free roaming. Fenced-in dogs are less likely to be hit by vehicles, have fewer aggressive interactions with other dogs, have decreased exposure to contagious diseases, and are less available to pet thieves. There are advantages and disadvantages to invisible fences and the choice of fencing is one that takes research and careful consideration.

  • A therapy pet is an animal trained to provide comfort, emotional support, and therapeutic care to a wide range of people, often facing health challenges. Therapy pets may visit hospitals, retirement homes, hospice centers, nursing homes, and schools. Therapy pets are not the same as service animals.

  • Traveling with your pet can be fun and safe if you plan in advance by finding a pet-friendly hotel. Knowing what you want in a hotel and what the hotel wants from you can simplify the process. And preparing in advance with your pet in mind can make the trip more enjoyable for you and your furry travel companion.
