Emergencies

  • Pyothorax is the presence of inflammatory fluid or pus within the chest cavity, usually caused by a bacterial infection. This handout outlines causes, signs, treatment, and prognosis.

  • Pyrethrin insecticides are naturally derived from the Chrysanthemum flower, and pyrethroids are the synthetic versions. Pyrethroids are commonly found in products around the home for insect control. Cats and fish are very sensitive to these products.

  • Pyrethrin insecticides are naturally derived from the Chrysanthemum flower, and pyrethroids are the synthetic versions. Pyrethroids are commonly found in products around the home for insect control, as well as topical flea and tick preventives. The use of pyrethrins and pyrethroids is generally safe in dogs, but cats and fish are very sensitive to these products.

  • In the wild, a bird will try to uphold a strong appearance when sick. By the time a pet bird begins to display symptoms of illness, it has likely been sick for several days to weeks. Many things contribute to ill health. This handout provides bird owners with a list of signs that will alert them that their bird is sick.

  • Reproductive disease in ferrets is rare today, as most pet ferrets are spayed or neutered at a young age. One disease that is still occasionally seen in pet ferrets occurs in females that are not spayed. This is called hyperestrogenemia and is a result of persistently high blood levels of estrogen in unspayed females that are not bred or fails to ovulate.

  • Dystocia means difficulty giving birth or abnormal delivery. In reptiles that do not give live birth, dystocia may also be called egg binding or ovostasis. It is a relatively common problem in reptiles, and can be life-threatening. Any signs of abdominal swelling need attention.

  • Retinal detachment can cause sudden blindness or vision changes. It is generally secondary to an underlying condition like high blood pressure. Diagnostics and treatment are discussed. Prognosis is guarded to good depending on the underlying cause.

  • Sago palms are highly toxic to dogs and cats. They naturally occur in warmer areas of the United States and serve as indoor decor in many colder climates. All parts of the sago palm are poisonous, but the seeds (nuts) are the most toxic to pets. As with all poisoning cases, early detection and treatment increases the rate of success.

  • Salmon poisoning is a bacterial infection that occurs when dogs eat raw or undercooked salmon, trout, steelhead, or Pacific giant salamanders infected with a parasitic flatworm that is infected with a particular bacteria. If the infection is not treated, most dogs will die within two weeks.

  • A seizure, also known as a convulsion or fit, is a temporary, involuntary disturbance of normal brain function. If abnormal brain activity occurs in the motor cortex of the brain, it may cause uncontrollable muscle activity. Epilepsy is a condition that involves repeated seizures that may occur alone or in clusters. These seizures may be infrequent and unpredictable or they may occur at regular intervals.
